Celebrate the Chinese New Year on Friday, January 30th at PEM!
The following events are FREE with admission from 10:30 am - 5 pm:
10:30 am - 1 pm Learn about the Chinese animal zodiac, make your own animal finger puppets, and find your animal in the museum collection.
10:30 - 11 am & 2:45 - 3:15 pm Explore Chinese art during this fun look at some of the special objects in the museum's collection.
11:30 am - noon Watch a high-energy lion dance performance and Martial Arts Demonstration by Nam Pai Kung Fu Academy of Chinatown.
12:15 pm KUNG FU CINEMA! Iron Monkey, 1993, 85 minutes,Yuen Woo-ping, the acclaimed choreographer of The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, supplies sensational, nonstop martial arts in Iron Monkey, the spirited tale of a mysterious Chinese legend.
1 - 3 pm Celebrate the Lunar New Year by making a giant paper dragon in East India Marine Hall!
1:30 - 2 pm Martial arts expert Lin Lin Choy returns to PEM to perform a dramatic fan dance in the museum's Atrium.
2:30 - 3 pm Students from Calvin Chin's Martial Arts Academy return for an encore performance of their lively lion dance and kung fu skills
3:15 pm, KUNG FUN CINEMA! Drunken Master, 1978, 110 minutes. Drunken Master cemented Jackie Chan's stardom with dizzying kung fu acrobatic sequences. Chan plays Wong Fei Hung - the rebellious son of a kung fu master - who is apprenticed to another master with a unique "drunken" fighting style.
The following events are $7 and take place from 6:30 - 9:30 pm:
6:30 - 8 p.m. Explore Yin Yu Tang, A Chinese House and take part in zodiac animal art making activites 7:30 - 8 p.m. Watch a high-energy lion dance performance by Nam Pai Kung Fu Academy of Chinatown
8 - 9:30 p.m. Hear the Devil Music Ensemble accompany a rare screening of the 1929 film, Red Heroine Saturday, January 31st
