Save Your Local Economy . . . Three Stores at a Time.

The 3/50 Project: Saving The Brick and Mortars Our Nation is Built On

3: Think about which three independently owned businesses you'd miss most if they were gone. Stop in and say hello. Pick up a little something that will make someone smile. Your contribution is what keeps those businesses around.

50: If just half the employed U.S. population spent $50 each month in independently owned businesses, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. Imagine the positive impact if 3/4 of the employed population did that.

68:
For every $100 spent in independently owned stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home.

1: The number of people it takes to start the trend . . . you.

Pick 3. Spend 50. Save your local economy. Visit the350project.net.

Does the rise of consumer culture bother you?

...If so, then check out "Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood" on Saturday, June 20 at 10 am at CinemaSalem . . . for FREE! (CinemaSalem has generously donated its facilities)

Are your kids always nagging you for stuff? Do you want kids to be happy for who they are, and now what they own? Are you worried about children growing up too fast? Are gender stereotypes cramping their style? Do you want kids to think for themselves? Do you value kids' imagination? Does the rise of consumer culture bother you?

Join CinemaSalem for "an eye-opening account of the pervasive and pernicious effects of children's advertising on the health and well-being of kids" and a lively discussion afterwards in CinemaSalem's cafe.

For more information, visit www.consumingkidsthemovie.com or www.commercialfreechildhood.org

Guest Speaker: Rouge Cosmetics

A big THANKS to Andrea Ducharme from Rouge!

We were so spoiled at our Parenting Group on Friday when Andrea visited! I loved that even though she is a diva (obviously, and in a good way) the most important thing to Andrea is that we take care of ourselves and our skin. In other words: sunscreen! She showed us several to choose from: all mineral based, paraben free, organic!

And personally, I liked the BareMinerals Powder, which was nice and light and super, super easy. Perfect for low maintenance me!

But let me tell you, I felt like I was glowing after my makeover. Andrea kept it nice and simple and I got so many compliments on Friday! I can't wait to stock up.

We hope to have her back again. . . and again and again. Thank you Rouge!

What a Great Morning!

This morning was our "Once Crunched Launch Party," which was a huge success!

Locals perused our new line of gently-used clothing, we raised money for the amazing non-profit "For Jake's Sake" (more below), and we snacked on amazing food donated by Gulu Gulu Cafe! We couldn't have asked for anything more!

“For Jake’s Sake" is the current non-profit who will receive a portion of the proceeds from "Once Crunched." A local non-profit dedicated to offering financial assistance for autistic children in Massachusetts, "For Jake's Sake" was founded in 2008 by Dawn Cobak and works to help autistic children gain access to effective therapies they otherwise could not afford. To learn more about this wonderful organization, visit www.forjakessake.org.

Once Crunched Launch Party - TODAY!

To kick off “Once Crunched,” CGB is hosting a “Once Crunched Launch Party.” Today from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, we will be showing off our gently used baby and children's items, munching on yummy treats (donated by our AMAZING friends at Gulu Gulu Cafe!) and learning about the wonderful organization "For Jake's Sake."

If you can’t attend our party, but would like to schedule an appointment to donate gently used items (like organic clothing, wooden toys, cloth diapers, etc) or have questions, please contact Jennie or Amy at 978.741.0800 or crunchygranolababy@verizon.net.

More About Once Crunched: CGB recently launched a new line called “Once Crunched,” which consists of gently used baby and children’s items.Items closely resemble current CGB products (organic, fair trade, etc) and are both donated by and sold to eco-conscious customers. The aim of “Once Crunched” is to give families another way to go green. By donating their items, families are supporting a local business, recycling their own products and giving other families the opportunity to buy eco-products secondhand. Additionally, CGB provides a shop discount voucher for donated items and a 5% donation of “Once Crunched” proceeds to local, non-profit organizations.

It's Time for Produce!

Are you a 2009 Summer CSA shareholder?

Well, we have good news! The CGB / Heaven's Harvest Farm CSA kicks off on Thursday, June 18!

Details are noted below:

*Pick-up is on Thursdays from 3:00 - 6:30 pm. If you cannot make it during this time or are traveling, please find friends or neighbors who would be willing to pick up produce. If you cannot find anyone to pick up your share, please notify CGB in advance so we may donate it to a Salem charity.

*There are two pick-up checklists: full and half shares. When picking up your share, please check off your name. Additionally, there is a registration form that needs to be completed during the first CSA pickup.

*Please Note! When picking up your share, please take produce from the box with your name! Additionally, you will need your own tote bag to carry home your share since the farm re-uses the boxes each week.

*CGB tries to be as accommodating as possible, but please remember that we are still just retail shop that is not capable of storing produce.

*If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact Jennie or Amy at 978.741.0800 or crunchygranolababy@verizon.net

And we're introducing a few new concepts this time:

1.) Word of mouth isn't reliable. Paper wastes trees. The Google Group crashed and burned.

So we're kickin' off our Crunchy Granola Baby CSA Blog!

Visit our blog to view recipes, photos, ideas and anything else related to our weekly yummy produce! And if you're really interested in what we've got to say, subscribe to our blog and share your own produce stories!
Also, we hope to introduce the "Bamboo Spoon Award", check the blog often for all the details!

Link to us at: http://crunchygranolababycsa.blogspot.com/

2. Want to know exactly when your produce has arrived at CGB?!

Follow Crunchy Granola Baby on Twitter to receive our real-time tweets!

3. Egg Share, Anyone?

A local company is now offering a certified organic egg share! The eggs would be delivered for 15 weeks, right alongside your regular produce share.

And did we mention the price is great? A 1/2 dozen organic eggs cost just $45 and a dozen cost $90.

If you are interested in participating in our new egg share, please contact Amy or Jennie by Sunday, June 7!
